Framing the Concerto are two works by Dvor\u00e1k: the spirited Carnival Overture<\/i>, which brims with lively Czech folk music, and the Symphony No.7, considered by many to be Dvor\u00e1k\u2019s greatest achievement. Shortly before its completion, he wrote: \u2018I am now busy with this symphony for London, and wherever I go I can think of nothing else. God grant that this Czech music will move the world!\u2019<\/p>\n 7.30pm, Tuesday 8th October 2013 BERLIOZ Roman Carnival Overture Three outstanding works by three great masters, beginning with the glittering festivities of a Roman carnival, as portrayed by Berlioz in music full of romance and joie de vivre<\/i>. Beethoven\u2019s Violin Concerto is a masterpiece of the genre, bridging the gap between Classical and Romantic concerto styles with elegance and wit. Beethoven\u2019s genius so overwhelmed Brahms that he was slow to write works that might be compared with those of his idol. It took Brahms nearly fifteen years to compose his First Symphony, but the work was worth the wait. The Symphony exudes great nobility and mastery of form, with a powerful opening movement, lyrical Andante<\/i>, graceful third movement and stirring finale.<\/p>\n 7.30pm, Thursday 17th October 2013 COPLAND Fanfare for the Common Man A scintillating concert showcasing the outstanding Royal Philharmonic Orchestra brass section, joined by the dazzling American trumpet player Allen Vizzutti. A true virtuoso, Vizzutti is equally at home playing classical and jazz, and his performance style incorporates elements of both styles \u2013 with thrilling results. The great jazz musician Chick Corea hailed Allen Vizzutti for his \u2018easy control, polyharmonic wit, orchestral penmanship, punctuated spiritual warmth\u2019, adding that \u2018rarely do so many qualities find themselves in one musician\u2019.<\/p>\n This all-brass programme is conducted by Bramwell Tovey, whose composition Pictures in the Smoke<\/i> is also featured. Opening with Copland\u2019s glorious Fanfare for the Common Man<\/i>, the concert includes an arrangement of Walton\u2019s rousing Spitfire Prelude and Fugue<\/i>, and Vizzutti takes centre stage for the breathtaking Carnival of Venice<\/i>.<\/p>\n 7.30pm, Saturday 19th October 2013 BIZET L\u2019Arl\u00e9sienne Suite No.1 An unmissable concert, featuring celebrated violinist Tasmin Little playing Bruch\u2019s ravishing Violin Concerto No.1. Bruch\u2019s most famous composition, this irresistible work showcases the violin\u2019s capacity for soaring, singing melodies and dazzling display. Little was hailed earlier this year for her \u2018careful articulation and a truly beautiful elegance of playing\u2026 Hers is a warmly human personality, and her artistry is truly refined.\u2019<\/p>\n The programme also features Bizet\u2019s first suite of music from L\u2019Arl\u00e9sienne<\/i>, full of memorable tunes, and culminates in the joyous Second Symphony by Tchaikovsky. The Symphony includes three Ukrainian folk songs, which gives the Symphony its nickname \u2013 \u2018Little Russia\u2019, which was a term used to describe Ukraine at the time.<\/p>\n 7.30pm, Thursday 7th November 2013 HUMPERDINCK Hansel and Gretel Overture A programme encompassing delicious refinement and great passion, opening with the Overture to German composer Humperdinck\u2019s \u2018fairy tale opera\u2019, Hansel and Gretel<\/i>. The work was first conducted by Richard Strauss, and Humperdinck\u2019s Overture exudes a Straussian romance and wit, full of charming melodies and rich orchestration. Pianist Mario Galeani performs Beethoven\u2019s majestic Third Piano Concerto, with its dramatic first movement, a deeply beautiful Largo<\/i>, and the famous Rondo<\/i>. While composing his extraordinary Sixth Symphony, Tchaikovsky wrote to his brother, declaring: \u2018It seems that the best of all my works is coming forth from me.\u2019 Many would agree: the ‘Path\u00e9tique’ represents some of the most intensely personal and powerful of all Tchaikovsky\u2019s music.<\/p>\n 7.30pm, Thursday 12th November 2013 TCHAIKOVSKY Serenade for Strings An essential concert for all lovers of Tchaikovsky\u2019s music, this programme celebrates the many facets of the composer\u2019s style, from elegant poignancy, to unfettered emotion, to dancing good humour. Tchaikovsky\u2019s Serenade for Strings<\/i> was inspired by Mozart, a composer much admired by Tchaikovsky, who said of the Serenade<\/i> that it was written \u2018from inner compulsion. This is a piece from the heart\u2019. The Violin Concerto was not much appreciated during Tchaikovsky\u2019s lifetime, but its vibrant and heartfelt melodies have ensured that the work remains hugely popular with audiences today. The programme concludes with unique arrangements of Tchaikovsky\u2019s glorious Swan Lake<\/i>, made by the concert\u2019s acclaimed conductor, Barry Wordsworth.<\/p>\n 7.30pm, Thursday 28th November 2013 RAVEL Le tombeau de Couperin A programme of contrasting musical styles unified by exquisite emotional power. Composed during World War One, Ravel dedicated each movement of his Le tombeau de Couperin<\/i> to a fallen friend. Yet the influence of the Baroque composer, Couperin, results in music of bittersweet understatement. Also written in response to the First World War, Elgar\u2019s Cello Concerto is one of his greatest works, the cello evoking the human voice as it unfolds aching, deeply moving melodies. The Concerto is performed by Jamie Walton, hailed by the Washington Post<\/i> as \u2018a major cello talent\u2026 Though relatively young, he plays with the dignity and reserve of a well-seasoned artist\u2019.
