Have with missed out your favourite pub? Email us and we'll put it in this guide!

Ahh, now we come to perhaps one of the most enjoyed sections of this website to research for... ;-) This is a guide to some of the excellent pubs and bars that are located in Kensington and Chelsea. The one thing you will notice on your visit to London, and indeed elsewhere in Britian, is that you are never very far from a pub! Perhaps that says a lot about the British (obviously that we're a jolly lot!).

There are hundreds of standard pubs dotted around in London in general, as well as in Kensington and Chelsea, and some better than others. Wherever you are, you will find that you rarely have to walk very far to find some food and drink. However, here we bring you what we think are some of the best in the area.

Chelsea
Cactus Blue
86 Fulham Road London SW3 Tel: 020 7395 5801 Underground: South Kensington
A bar with a beautiful modern design. One of my crowd's favourite, we spent a pleasant few hours in this packed place. Recommended by several guides, including the Time Out Guide to London. Food is medium priced and there is a good selection.

The Crescent 99 Fulham Road London SW3 Tel: 020 7225 2244  Underground: South Kensington
Stylish and modern wine bar located at Brompton Cross, one of the most exclusive restaurant areas in London. Smallish ground floor with more space in the basement. Friendly, knowledgeable barman. They have a selection of 250 wines and they sell a wide range by the glass. The London evening paper, the Evening Standard, says "The Crescent has one of London's ten best wine lists." The Zagat Guide confirms this by saying "a fantastic wine list".

Dome Café 354 King's Road London SW3 Tel: 020 7352 2828 Underground: Sloane Sq./South Kensington
A chain of over 20 cafés, which are also licensed to sell drinks without serving food. Although these appear all over London, this one is supposedly special as it is frequented by local celebrities. Nevertheless, it is a pleasantly relaxing cafe with an assortment of drinks and good food on offer.

The Phene Arms 9 Phene Arms London SW3 Tel: 020 7352 3294 Open: 11.00-23.00 (Mon-Sat) 12.00-22.30 (Sun) Underground: Sloane Sq. or South Kensington
Time Out says that this is probably still the best pub in Chelsea: "Damn near perfection". Good mixture of locals and celebrities, and even George Best has been spotted here. There is a summer terrace which has gas heaters for those chilly nights. What more can one ask for?

Notting Hill
All Bar One
126-128 Notting Hill Gate London W11 Underground: Notting Hill Gate
Another chain bar and this one provides a good selection of drinks with tasty and reasonably priced food. The wooden decor does not give it a particularly cosy feel, but this bar is very popular with the young, hip crowd. As it should be, considering Notting Hill is supposed to be the hippest place in London at the moment.

The Cow 89 Westbourne Park Road London W2 Tel: 020 7221 0021 Open: 12.00-23.00 (Mon-Sat), 12.00-22.30 (Sun) Food: bar 12.30-15.00 and 18.30-22.30 (Mon-Sat), 18.30-22.00 (Sun); restaurant 19.00-23.00 (Mon-Fri), 12.00-15.00 (Sat-Sun) Underground: Royal Oak or Westbourne Park
Really in Westminster, but who cares as it's only a few minutes walk from Portobello Road? High praise from all guides, this place was founded by Tom Conran of Conran family fame. Irish pub with good, reasonably priced food, especially fish and oysters. I have visited with friends on several afternoons when it was very quiet. Gets very packed during summer evenings, though!

The Notting Hill Arts Club 21 Notting Hill Gate London W11 Tel: 020 7229 8016 Underground: Notting Hill Gate
One of the hippest places in trendy Notting Hill. Popular with the literary and artistic crowd. Free entry before 8pm and £7 after. DJs are there on many evenings, and there is also live music sometimes. Check the website for details of what's on on each weeknight.

The Portobello Star 171 Portobello Road London W11 Tel: 020 7229 8016 Open: 11.00-23.00 (Mon-Sat), 12.00-22.30 (Sun) Underground: Ladbroke Grove or Notting Hill Gate
Not bad, but rather overrated. Close to several antique markets, so if you are a thirsty and hungry whilst hunting for goodies, come here for the drinks but get original German sausages, Thai food or West Indian specialities from the kiosks just a few metres up the road.

The Westbourne Tavern 101 Westbourne Park Villas London W2 Tel: 020 7221 1332 Underground: Royal Oak or Westbourne Park
Just across the road from The Cow. Lovely outside seating area at the front, which catches the sun directly. I like this place. Good selection of beer and food. I would say it is one of my favourite drinking places.

Earl's Court
O'Neills
326 Earl's Court Road London SW5 Tel: 020 7373 9172 Underground: Earl's Court
This one in Earl's Court is one of the chain of Irish pubs, of which there are 102 across the country. There is much debate about theme pubs and some tell you to avoid them at all costs. However, O'Neills is one of the best of the bunch. They sell an amazing range of Irish whiskeys as well as some delicious food. Good for meeting people in the afternoon, as they are not too busy.

Wine Gallery 49 Hollywood Road London SW10 Tel: 020 7352 7572 Open: 12.00-16.00, 19.00-00.00 (Mon-Sat), 12.00-16.00, 19.00-22.30 (Sun) Underground: Earl's Court
A friend was extremely impressed with the huge selection of wines sold at unbelievably low prices (starting from under £4, good champagne from under £15). Smart bar with a nice patio outside. Three cheers!

Kensington
Julie's Bar
137 Portland Road London W11 Tel: 020 7727 7985 Open: 11.00-23.00 (Mon-Sat), 11.00-22.30 (Sun) Underground: Holland Park
Has been popular with the in-crowd for donkey years. Beautifully decorated with Victorian and Oriental antiques. The food is great.

The Devonshire Arms 37 Marloes Road London W8 Underground: High St. Kensington/Earl's Court
Renovated a couple of years back, a former "standard" pub now has typical trendy-bar type decor, although I'm very pleased to see that typical pub details remain...namely, the selection of drinks and draught beer! Front garden for seating, open all year round if you are brave enough. Despite numerous other pubs in the Kensington, locals must think something special about this place (that certainly goes for me!), as I've never seen it anything less than packed. I've had no luck finding seating at 6pm on a Thursday, and Friday nights see it getting as packed as any hip pub/bar, and this is despite the fact that it closes at 11pm! I still like this place, though!

The Kensington Arms 28 Abingdon Road London W8 Underground: High St. Kensington
Conveniently located just off Kensington High Street. A conventional English pub, recently renovated, and although rather small, one of the perks about the Arms is the lovely pool table located inside. Huge screen comes out to entertain the patrons with sport games shown on Sky. If unable to get a ticket for a football match, come here and watch in a pleasant surrounding with a good selection of beers and food.

The Abingdon 54 Abingdon Road London W8 Underground: High St. Kensington or Earl's Court
Quite a sophisticated place! Part bar, part restaurant, I can vouch that the meals here are very tasty indeed, with amazingly quick service! Hot snacks also available in the bar area. A nice place to unwind after work, although many others seem to have the same idea. Outside seating during summer.

The Scarsdale 23a Edwardes Square London W8 Tel: 020 7937 1811 Underground: High St. Kensington or Earl's Court
A lovely place for a meal or drink (or both!). A typical English pub, frequented by locals (as the houses in the Square cost £2.5-£3million, there are probably more millionaires here than in any other pub in London). Beautifully kept with a wonderful front garden complete with tables to sit at, flowers and trees to provide shade. You'll find it absolutely packed on summer nights!

    Kensington and Chelsea Pub Crawl
Why not go on a pub crawl and combine all of the above places? For the really ambitious, you could try all of these places in one day. However, for those who aren't quite so energetic, here's how to split it across three evenings: (Please note that the authors accept no responsibility for harm to anyone's health!)

Evening 1:

Start from the Westbourne Tavern, which you can reach by Westbourne Park Underground station. Almost opposite it is The Cow. For the next place, you'll have to walk a bit further, right down Westbourne Park Road, to the junction with Portobello Road. As a slight detour from this crawl, you'll find a Coffee Republic on the corner, which is the boarded up shop in the scene from the film Notting Hill, in front of which Hugh Grant spills coffee all over Julia Roberts. Turning left into Portobello Road, you'll come across the Portobello Star. Continue walking south and you'll come to Notting Hill Gate, where you'll find All Bar One. You might like to end your evening at the late-night Notting Hill Arts Club.

Evening 2:

As you've now recovered from the previous night, it's time to think about day 2. Get to High Street Kensington by underground and go east towards Earl's Court. Pass the cinema, and turn left into Edwardes Square for the beautiful The Scarsdale. Head a bit northeast (crossing Earl's Court Road) towards Abingdon Road for The Kensington Arms, perhaps even engaging in a game of pool. Head south down the same road for The Abingdon. Then head west down Abingdon Villas towards Marloes Road, at which you should turn right and head south to get to The Devonshire Arms.

Evening 3:

Dress up for the posh pubs and bars in Chelsea and try to mingle in with the locals. Start at Brompton Cross - get there from nearby South Kensington Underground Station. Go to The Crescent first and choose from the fantastic wine list. Carry on down Fulham Road for Cactus Blue and try some of the good food here too. When finished, turn off down nearby Dovehouse Street and carry on down this road to the King's Road and turn right. Head south-west towards The Phene Arms. This should be the fitting end to this pub crawl. Thus return the next day to King's Road for the Dome Café and nurse your head with a nice cappuccino!
